In Hong Kong, Legislative Councillors throw things at government officials to express their views. In Britain, Members of Parliament, or MPs, use words to express their views. I think it is more powerful to use words than to throw bananas. Last week, MPs had a debate in Parliament to discuss banning US presidential candidate Donald Trump from entering Britain. Half a million Britons (people from Britain) signed a petition to ban him after he said he would ban Muslims from entering the US if he got elected as president. The debate was heated (passionate, angry) but MPs did not throw things, shout, or hold up protest signs like our Legislative Councillors. They used words instead to criticize Trump.

The MPs used many different words to insult Trump. The one I liked best was a word a female MP used to insult Trump. The word she used was “wazzock”. It’s a slang word to insult people in a rude way. It was popular among young Britons in the 1990s but is seldom used nowadays. It means an idiot, a fool, or an annoying person. Some MPs called Trump a demagogue. A demagogue is a person, especially a politician, who uses prejudices, racial hatred, and lies to win the support of the people. Hitler was a demagogue. MPs also called Trump a buffoon. The word “buffoon” means a clown, a fool, or a stupid person.

Most MPs criticized Trump during the debate for saying he would ban Muslims from the US if elected, but most MPs also said they would not ban him from entering Britain. They said even though Trump was a demagogue, it would be wrong to ban people because of their political views. I agree with this. People have a right to free speech even if you don’t like what they say. I agree Trump is a wazzock but he has a right to say he will ban Muslims if elected. If Americans do not support banning Muslims, they can choose not to elect Trump. I hope our Legislative Councillors will learn from the MPs and use words instead of bananas.
