It is often said that winners should be magnanimous in victory. The pan-democrats were not magnanimous in their victory last week. They gloated and even laughed at the botched attempt by pro-establishment legislative councillors to delay the vote on the political reform framework by walking out just as voting was about to start. As I said in my previous column, pro-establishment legislators wanted to delay the vote because Lau Wong-fat, also a pro-establishment legislator, had not yet arrived to vote. But they made knuckleheads of themselves because not enough of them walked out to delay the vote. As a result, 33 pro-establishment legislators, missed their chance to vote, giving the pan-democrats a much bigger victory than everyone had expected.
The pro-establishment legislators felt so humiliated (ashamed) by their botched walk-out that several of them cried when interviewed by the media. Winners, especially those who win when the other side makes an unintended blunder, should be magnanimous. To be magnanimous means to be forgiving, kind, or generous, especially to those who lose. To gloat is to boast or show great happiness about your own success and another person's failure. The word "botch" is similar to the word "bungle", which I used in my previous column. It means to mishandle or mismanage something. The word "blunder" has a similar meaning. A blunder is a stupid or careless mistake. The slang word "knucklehead" means an idiot.
Pro-establishment legislators made knuckleheads of themselves with their botched walk-out but instead of being magnanimous in their victory, pro-democracy legislators gloated and some laughed. Pro-establishment legislators Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee and Jeffery Lam Kin-fung cried over their blunder. I felt sorry for them but Democratic Party chairwoman Emily Lau Wai-hing gloated and laughed during media interviews. James Tien Pei-chun, who did not walk out, also laughed during a radio interview even though he belongs to the pro-establishment camp. This is not surprising. It is well-known that he hates Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying and is not friendly with some leaders of the pro-establishment camp. The voting down of the reform framework is not a laughing matter. The winners should be magnanimous.

常言道，勝者在勝出時也該寬宏大量（magnanimous）。上星期，泛民勝出時，就說不上是寬宏大量（magnanimous）了。他們幸災樂禍（gloated），甚至對於建制派立法會議員在表決要開始時走出會議廳，笨拙的（botched）企圖耽延政改框架表決，他們亦加以嘲笑。正如我在上一篇專欄中說過，建制派立法會議員希望延誤表決，因為同為建制派議員的劉皇發，還未趕及到場投票。然而，他們令自己變得像傻瓜（knuckleheads），因為不夠足夠的人數走出去以延誤表決。結果，三十三位建制派議員，錯失投票的機會，向泛民雙手奉上更大的勝利，是眾人始料不及的。
建制派為自己笨拙的（botched）出走感到蒙羞（humiliated），有幾個接受傳媒訪問時甚至落下淚來。勝利者好應有大度的雅量（magnanimous），特別是那些在對方犯下意外疏忽（blunder）時獲勝的人。To be magnanimous就是寬大、友善或慷慨，尤指對落敗者。To gloat就是幸災樂禍，對於自己的成功和其他人的落敗洋洋得意。Botch跟我上一篇用到的bungle 一字接近，都解作拙手笨腳的處理事情。Blunder 都有類似的意思，解作愚蠢或疏忽的差錯。俚語knucklehead 是指傻瓜。
