Today is Christmas Eve. Many people will be partying (verb) tonight. The word “party” is normally used as a noun but nowadays it can also be used as a verb. To “party” means to have a good time with friends by eating, drinking, and dancing. Many restaurants charge an arm and a leg on Christmas Eve. To charge an arm and a leg means to charge a lot of money. Christmas has become too commercialized. When something is commercialized, it means it is being used to make a profit. December 25 is a religious day meant to remember Jesus Christ. That’s why it’s called Christmas Day.
But Christmas has become so commercialized that many people all over the world do not even bother to remember that Christmas Day is supposed the celebrate the birth of Christ. They think about partying, exchanging gifts, and going on holidays. Restaurants and shops only care about commercializing Christmas so they can make a profit. I do not want to be a party pooper but I hope more people will spend at least some of their time thinking about the true meaning of Christmas. The slang expression “party pooper” means a person who spoils the fun of a party. I do not want to spoil the fun of people who party during Christmas but it makes me angry to see restaurants charging an arm and a leg on Christmas Eve. I always boycott special Christmas Eve dinners in restaurants that charge an arm and a leg.
Last Christmas I wrote about the saying “Peace on Earth, Goodwill toward men”. According to the Bible, it was used by the angels to tell of the birth of Jesus. Goodwill toward men means being good and kind to each other. Last year, Occupy Central ended just before Christmas. Hong Kong was a divided city. People were not good and kind to each other. One year has passed but our city is still very politically divided over issues such as the copyright amendment bill and allowing mainland immigration officials at the high-speed railway terminus in West Kowloon. I hope we can become a less divided city as time passes. Merry Christmas.

今天是平安夜，許多人今晚都會狂歡作樂（partying，動詞）。Party通常作名詞用，但時至今日，也可作動詞用。To “party”意思就是與好友歡聚，盡情吃喝玩樂。許多餐廳在平安夜都會開天索價（charge an arm and a leg）。 To charge an arm and a leg 就是收取高昂的費用。聖誕已然變得太商業化（commercialized）。當一件事被commercialized，即是說它被用作賺錢。十二月二十五日是一個宗教日子，用以記念耶穌基督，因此被稱為Christmas Day。
但聖誕節現在商業化（commercialized）得很，世界各地的人都不再在乎聖誕本為慶祝基督的降生。他們只想着狂歡作樂（ partying）、交換禮物和度假。食肆和商舖只關心如何令聖誕更商業化（commercializing），好讓他們能賺取更高利潤。我不想掃興（to be a party pooper），但我希望更多人能至少花一點時間，去思想聖誕真正的意義。俚語party pooper的意思是破壞派對興致的人。我不想破壞人們在聖誕期間狂歡作樂（party）的興致，但見到食肆在平安夜開天殺價（ charging an arm and a leg），實在令我憤憤不平。我總是杯葛餐廳那些開天索價（charge an arm and a leg）的特別聖誕晚餐。
