■希望2016年香港內部的憤恨得以終止。
The New Year is fast approaching. When something is “fast approaching”, it means it is coming very soon, or it is almost here. What will 2016 bring? When you say “what will 2016 bring?” it means you are wondering what will happen in 2016. I am not a soothsayer so I do not know what 2016 will bring. A soothsayer is a person who is supposed to be able to foresee the future. Another word for “soothsayer” is clairvoyant. It is a hard word to pronounce if you are not a fluent English-speaker. I now also do an audio version of my columns in the Headline Daily and the Standard so you can listen to the pronunciation of words. Do you believe in soothsayers? I do not.
I think all soothsayers are fakes. There are several ways to use the word “fake”. A fake is a person who claims to be something he is not. If you say you are a doctor but you are not really a doctor, then you are a fake. Something that is not genuine can also be called a fake. Hong Kong’s pan-democrats say the political reform offered by the central government is fake democracy because the candidates for chief executive must be acceptable to Beijing. Many people in mainland China make illegal copies of well-known brands of handbags, clothes, and other items. These can also be called fakes.
I do not know what 2016 will bring. I hope it will bring an end to the Islamic State, also known as ISIS. I also hope it will bring an end to Donald Trump. He is an idiot who shoots his mouth off. The American slang expression “shoot your mouth off” means to talk too much without thinking. I cannot understand why so many Americans like Donald Trump. I am an American but I will definitely not vote for him. Hong Kong is a very bitter society at present. The word “bitter” has many meanings but used this way it means full of anger. I hope 2016 will bring an end to the bitterness.

新年很快臨近（fast approaching）。當某事正fast approaching，即是它很快來臨，或差不多便到了。What will 2016 bring？當你說“what will 2016 bring?”意思是你在稀奇二○一六年到底會發生何事。我不是預言家（soothsayer），所以我也不知道二○一六年會發生甚麼事（what 2016 will bring）。A soothsayer 就是能預知未來的預言家或占卜師，另一個表達 soothsayer的字是先知（clairvoyant），若你不是操流利英語的人，它會是個很難讀的字。我現在於《頭條日報》和《英文虎報》的專欄也有「有聲朗讀版」，你便可以聽到各個字詞的發音。你相信預言家（soothsayers）所言嗎？我就不信了。
我認為所有預言家（soothsayers）都是冒充的（fakes）。Fake這個字有不同用法，a fake 就是假裝或冒充成某人的騙子。若你說你是醫生而你並非真的是醫生，那你就是a fake。不是真實的偽造品也可叫作a fake。香港的泛民派說，中央政府的政改方案是假（fake）普選，因為特首候選人必須獲得北京認可。許多在內地人也會非法製作名牌手袋、衣服或其他物品的翻版，這些贗品或冒牌貨也可叫作fakes。
我不曉得二○一六年會發生何事（what 2016 will bring）。我希望它會讓伊斯蘭國結束，它也被稱為ISIS。我也希望下年可叫特朗普完蛋，他是個白癡，只懂信口開河（shoots his mouth off）。美式俚語“shoot your mouth off”意思就是說話不經大腦、天花亂墜的瞎扯。我不能理解為何那麼多美國人喜歡特朗普。我是美國人，但我必定不會投他一票。香港現時是個滿是憤恨（bitter）的城市。Bitter有許多意思，在這裏是指滿是憤恨。我希望2016年可以令這種憤恨（bitterness）得以終止。
