During the American Civil War, a Union officer had disobeyed or failed to comprehend an order."I believe I'll sit down," said Edwin Stanton, Secretary of War,"and give that man a piece of my mind."
"Do so," said Lincoln,"write him now. Make it sharp. Cut him all up."
Stanton did not need a second invitation. It was a bone crusher that he read to the president.
"That's right," said Lincoln."Why, that's a good one."
"Whom can I send it by?"mused Stanton.
"Send it！" replied Lincoln."Why, don't send it at all. Tear it up. You have freed your mind on the subject, and that is all that is necessary. Tear it up. You never want to send such letters; I never do."
美國南北戰爭期間，北軍一名軍官違背或誤解了一道命令。戰爭部長埃德溫．斯坦頓說：「我得坐下來寫封信，把他痛斥一頓。」
林肯說：「寫吧，現在就寫。措詞要辛辣，罵得他無地自容。」
斯坦頓再不猶豫，馬上下筆，寫罷，把那封絲毫不留餘地的信讀給林肯總統聽。
林肯說：「不錯，寫得好。」
斯坦頓自言自語說：「叫誰送信好呢？」
林肯回答：「送信？啊，不要送出，撕掉吧。你已經就這件事充分表達了想法，此外不必再做什麼。把信撕掉吧。這樣的信，絕對不宜寄出。我從來都是這樣。」
