Two weeks ago, Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying had a press conference after his annual policy speech in the Legislative Council. I did not attend but watched the entire press conference live on TV. Some Hong Kong reporters called the Chief Executive “C.Y.” when they asked questions. It appalled (shocked) me to see that. Although the Chief Executive’s full name is Leung Chun-ying, he is also known as C.Y. Leung and some newspapers alternate (switch, change) between Leung Chun-ying and C.Y. Leung. There is nothing wrong with that. When George W. Bush was president, the US media sometimes informally referred to him as George W. But American reporters never called him George W, George, or even Mr Bush at press conferences or when they talked with him. They always called him Mr President.

Barack Obama is always called Mr President at press conferences. Even erstwhile (former, past) US presidents, such as Jimmy Carter, are still called Mr President. When Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State, reporters called her Madam Secretary or Secretary Clinton. They did not call her Hillary. Britain’s leader David Cameron is called Prime Minister by reporters, not David. When Donald Tsang Yam-kuen was the Chief Executive, I called him Mr Chief Executive when I interviewed him on my TV show. I call Leung Chun ying Mr Chief Executive every time I see or interview him. I call Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor Mrs Chief Secretary whenever I interview or see her, and I call the Secretaries I interview Mr Secretary.

It is impertinent (rude, impolite, insolent) for reporters to call the Chief Executive C.Y. They should say 特首(Chief Executive). They should call Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor 司長 (Chief Secretary). They should say 局長 for all the Secretaries. People who loathe (dislike, hate, detest) Leung Chun-ying say they do not want to call him Mr Chief Executive. That is a puerile (silly, childish) reason. Americans who hated George W. Bush for starting two Middle East wars still called him Mr President. Calling Leung Chun-ying Mr Chief Executive doesn’t necessarily mean you are giving him respect. You are just giving respect to the position, not the person holding it.

Leung。
