問：山行路上，有告示說：「Feeding of wild animals leads to problems. Nature can meet their needs餵飼野生動物壞處多，天然覓食最穩妥。」Feeding of wild animals的of一字，可不可略去？
答：那of當然可以略去，意思沒有分別。一般而言，動名詞（gerund，即ing動詞）之後，可以直接受詞（object），也可用of帶出受詞。而假如用of，則那動名詞之前多加the或a，例如：（1）Storming the Bastille/ The storming of the Bastille marked the beginning of the French Revolution（攻打巴斯底監獄，成為法國大革命的序幕）。（2）The breach between them was made up by shaking hands/a shaking of hands（他們握手，修補了破裂的關係）。讀者示下那一句，Feeding之前可加the字，但不加也可以。
Feeding of wild animals這樣的說法，語氣沒有feeding wild animals那麼隨便，所以常用於官方文字。
問：我作文用了when I was your age（我在你這個年紀的時候）、with a smartness of air（一副伶俐神情）這兩個寫法，英文老師改為when I was at your age以及with a smartness of temperament，改得對嗎？
答：那位老師把不錯的英文改錯了。英文會說He is my age（他和我年紀相同）、We are the same age（我們年紀相同）等，不用at字。而temperament是「本性」，和air（神情）意思不同。要說「本性伶俐」，可說a smart temperament，很少說a smartness of temperament。
