This morning I woke up feeling sad. I had hoped I could be a freeloader tonight but I cannot. It is the fault of Democratic Party chairman Emily Lau Wai-hing. She could have let me be a freeloader but she did not. Maybe she thinks I am pro-establishment. Maybe that is why she decided I could not be a freeloader tonight. But I want to assure her I am neither pro-establishment nor pro-democracy. I am pro-free food and pro-free wine. I don’t mind being pro-democracy if I can be a freeloader tonight. But Lau Wai-hing has not given me an opportunity to sing for my supper.

A freeloader is a person who always wants to get things for free, such as food, but never gives anything back. If you have a good job and good pay but live in the home of your parents without giving them any money, you are a freeloader. The word “supper” means an evening meal, or dinner. The expression “sing for your supper” means to do something for a person so you can get something back in return, usually a free meal. For example, you are singing for your supper if you are invited to a lunch or dinner gathering of businessmen but have to give a speech about the economy before the meal.

The Democratic Party will hold its annual anniversary dinner tonight. Lau Wai-hing invited me last year after I jokingly wrote that I wanted to join senior government officials in boycotting the dinner but could not boycott it because I had not been invited. I woke up feeling sad because she has not invited me this year. Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying wants to attend but Lau Wai-hing has refused to invite him. She has invited other senior officials but Leung Chun-ying has ordered them to boycott the dinner because he has not been invited. I want Lau Wai-hing to know I don’t mind singing for my supper by giving a speech saying I am pro-democracy even though in my heart I am pro-free food. I don’t mind saying anything to be a freeloader.
