Last week, the Mission Covenant Church Sister Annie’s Kindergarten and Nursery advertised in the media for a “Caucasian” English teacher. I was shocked to see such a racist advertisement by a church kindergarten. A Facebook user posted a photograph of it. Many Facebook users who saw it criticized the church, which apologized and removed the advertisement. I hope the Sister Annie’s Kindergarten and Nursery doesn’t teach its students that “Caucasian” means white because that is not totally correct. Historically, some experts had described “Caucasians” as light-skinned people from Northern Europe as well as darker-skinned people from North Africa and parts of India. Nowadays, the word “Caucasian” is used mostly in North America for white people of European origin. But “Caucasian” also means a person from the Caucasus, which is the region at the border of Europe and Asia.
Caucasians living in this region speak many languages, including Indo-European and Turkic, which is also used in Western China. The Sister Annie’s Kindergarten and Nursery wanted to hire a “Caucasian” to teach English. Today I’ll teach the kindergarten’s principal that not all native English speakers are “Caucasians”. “Caucasians” from the Caucasus are not native English speakers. The Mission Covenant Church said the kindergarten made a mistake when it said it wanted a “Caucasian” teacher. It said the kindergarten wanted to hire a “native English-speaking teacher”. Chinese and Indians born in America or Britain are also native English speakers but it is common knowledge that kindergartens here want to hire only white people even though many American-born or British-born Chinese and Indians have far better qualifications than white people.
Barack Obama is a native English speaker who went to Columbia and Harvard. Would a Hong Kong kindergarten hire him if he didn’t become well-known as the US president? I don’t think so. Many Hong Kong parents worship white people. They think only white people can teach English, even if they are German or French and not native English speakers. The former deputy director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, Chen Zou’er, was right when he said last week that many people in Hong Kong still have a colonial mentality.

上星期，基督教聖約教會司務道幼稚園暨幼兒園在媒體上登了一則廣告，招聘一位"Caucasian"英語老師。一間教會幼稚園刊登一篇如此帶有種族主義的廣告，令我很震驚。許多見到廣告的面書用戶紛紛批評教會，以致教會最終得道歉及撤回廣告。我希望司務道幼稚園暨幼兒園不會教學生"Caucasian"解作白種人，因為這不完全正確。歷史上來說，有些專家會將「高加索人」（"Caucasian"）形容為來自北歐膚色較淺的人種，以及來自北非和印度某些地區、膚色較深的人種。今天，「高加索人」（"Caucasian"）通常在北美使用，是指來自歐洲的白種人。但「高加索人」（"Caucasian"）也可以是指來自歐洲與亞洲邊界，高加索地區的人。
住在這地區的高加索人（Caucasians）操多種語言，包括印歐語系，以及在中國西部也會使用的突厥語。司務道幼稚園暨幼兒園想聘請一個「高加索人」（"Caucasian"）去教英語。今天我會教導幼稚園的校長，非所有以英語為母語的人都是高加索人（"Caucasians"），而來自高加索地區的高加索人（"Caucasians"）也並非以英語為母語的族群。聖約教會指，幼稚園說聘請「高加索人」（"Caucasian"）教師是犯了錯。他們說幼稚園想請的是「以英語為母語的老師」。在美國或英國出生的華人和印度人，也是以英語為母語的人，但顯而易見，幼稚園在這裏是想聘請白人，即使許多在美國或英國出生的華人與印度人的資格和條件都比白人更為優秀。
奧巴馬是以英語為母語的人，曾就讀哥倫比亞大學和哈佛大學。若他沒有因為當選美國總統而出名了，一間香港幼稚園會否聘請他？我認為不會。許多香港家長都崇拜白人。他們認為，只有白人能教英語，即使他們不是以英語為母語的德國人或法國人。前港澳事務辦公室副主任陳佐洱是對的，他上星期說香港許多人還抱持着殖民的心態。mickchug@gmail.com
