問：「嫌棄」英文怎麼說？例如「他糖尿病上眼，怕會失明，遭新婚妻子嫌棄」。
答：這一句，我會譯做He is afraid that his newly-wedded wife will turn away from him if he goes blind because of diabetic eye disease。Turn away from someone有「避開、不同情某人」的意思，和「嫌棄」不完全同義，但英文沒有一個「嫌棄」的同義詞。梁實秋《最新實用漢英詞典》和RH Mathews的《麥氏漢英大辭典》把「嫌棄」譯做reject（拒絕）、give up in disgust（感到厭惡而放棄）、despise（輕視）等，同樣不能完全表達「嫌棄」的意思。用turn away from，配合上下文，「嫌棄」的含義就很清楚。
問：帝琴灣一幅草地有告示說：「For hygiene reason, no dogs allowed in this lawn為保持環境衞生，不准攜帶狗隻進入草地。」No dogs allowed是不是No dogs is allowed的縮略？
答：原句有兩個錯誤，宜改正如下：For hygiene reasons, no dogs（are）allowed on this lawn，中文則可減去六字：「為保衞生，不准攜犬上草地。」No dogs之後的are字，在縮略句中可以省去。
留意凡是說for... reasons，那reasons習慣用複數形式，例如for security/ safety/ health/ personal reasons（由於保安／安全／健康／個人原因）。此外，lawn應和介系詞on連用，不用in，例如：They were sitting/ lying on the lawn（他們坐在／躺在草地上）。
